Bob's Burgers Season 9, Episode 2 Review: Ocean's Nine: Dune Buggy Edition and The Eggs of Disappointment | yahoo201027 Bob's Burgers Reviews
Never have I ever seen a heist movie when seeing this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers but man…what a crazy episode that I have to witness, even if I’m only talking about the main plot of the episode. In this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, the Belcher Kids team up with Mr. Fischoeder, their landlord, in order to win a prized dune buggy over at Family Funtime while Bob and Linda had to get a chicken from Teddy to lay an egg but having trouble doing so in my spoilerific review of the Second Episode of the Ninth Season, titled, “The Taking of Family Funtime One Two Three”.
Man, this episode isn’t holding any punches when it comes to the main plot. Already the second episode of the new season and out of nowhere, it’s like we’re taking a field trip that encounters some serious bumps along the way. Think of it like a road trip to Florida only to end up getting lost along the way and experience some weird and crazy shit in a narrow road on your way to find the highway to get you back on track. Or like in roller coaster, but not in an emotional way. More of a ride where you never expect what happens next.
I really loving the dynamic between both Louise and Mr. Fischoeder when the two decided to form an alliance to earn the dune buggy over at Family Funtime and how to earn to it. Mostly coming from Mr. Fischoeder telling the kids a little trick to earn more tickets than what Louise usually earn from what we saw in the beginning. To creating a team with Darryl, Jimmy Jr, Zeke, and the Pesto twins to that bizarre plot twist that some people called it and Louise outsmarting Fischoeder…wow…these two as the stars of the episode…it times like this where you wish you want more episodes between these two plotting schemes. Think of Louise becoming like a miniature version of Fischoeder. And the subplot…let’s just say, somewhat time wasting. We’ll get to that after the main plot.
Louise was that close from getting the prized dune buggy that she want to earn with the tickets she now got from playing a game of skeeball. But apparently, the prize clerk over at the same place that Louise is at used a machine to count the tickets and…not enough. And that made Louise mad over that and she, alongside both Gene and Tina, won’t stop until she gets the dune buggy. But of course, they need to get more money. I’m surprised that stealing while no one is looking idea isn’t coming in play? And really? A dune buggy? Louise, you’re 9 years old. I don’t think the whole dune buggy this isn’t your thing, mostly due to…age. Yeah that.
And speaking of getting money from Bob and Linda, enter Mr. Fischoeder. Entering into the restaurant and asking the two for the month’s rent…in which of course, Bob has to not pay him like the previous visits. But it looks like this isn’t the last we’ll be seeing Fischoeder for the whole episode when he told the kids while exiting out for a bit about a little trick that he knows that later on, Louise uses that said technique that Fischoeder blabbed about and instead of earning some tickets, like your usual 10-15 tickets, it’s more on the line of in the 20s. It may looked like it’s gonna be a cakewalk for Louise over a game of skeeball as she uses the technique that Fischoeder told them about. But while the use of that technique was good for Louise, takes a massive u-turn when the clerk noticed that Louise is earning more tickets than she and every other kid in the building would’ve get and decided to the shut the thing down. Because oh no, it’s broken. It needed to be repaired.
Yeah…that’s definitely bullshit. Something is very wrong here after that whole thing that got the machine to be off the plug. It’s like with football lately, people think that each of their games is rigged and it’s favoriting the other side. Go ask a Cleveland Browns fan following last week’s game over the Oakland Raiders. Or with the Democratic Primaries…we’re not gonna go all political in this. But let’s just say…Bernie would have won. There, I said it. Parking lot after next week’s episode. But yeah, the game stopped midway just as Louise gets more tickets? Anyone got a reminder of that one episode form Dexter’s Laboratory where Dexter used that machine to rig a whack-a-mole machine to get tickets? That of course, led to the alliance between both the Belcher kids and Mr. Fischoeder being formed as they paid him a visit over at Wonder Wharf. With his face covered in face painting.
The scene where Mr. Fischoeder shows the kids a storage room full of old arcade games almost seems like you’re getting a flashback to that one scene from Season 5’s The Oeder Games where Bob stumbled into a wide open area full of inactive amusement park rides. Thought it had reminded me of…that…back when I reviewed it back in 2015. Now I see more of Six Flags New Orleans after Katrina. Too soon? But yeah, a room full of old arcade games…man, that’s like if you go into your attic and found some of your parent’s old stuff hidden in a box and found something that you’re not supposed to find. I didn’t. Just putting that out there. Pretty sure y’all did.
Of course, in order to get the plan in place, Calvin has Louise, Tina, and Gene to assemble a team, or in 2018 terms, a squad, to I guess combine the tickets they would get to add up the total number of tickets they need to earn the dune buggy. And the people the Belcher kids found to assemble a crew, let’s just say…skills are needed to get the plan into place. If you want muscle? Looks like Tina has to get Zeke into the list. And of course, Jimmy Jr, cause why not. If you want someone who knows a lot of math and concept and skills, Gene gets Darryl added to the list. And, this is odd and bear with me with this one. The title of the episode is called “The Taking of Funtime One Two Three”, right? And the setting that will be taking place in the episode is over at Family Funtime? And you brought in Darryl? You think that an episode like this would put the seventh grade nerd into major play? Which he did, but in the supporting role category. Darryl’s an underrated character. Someone please give him an episode. Please? Oh yeah, and Louise got Andy and Ollie into the crew to assemble what appears to be an Ocean’s Eight, or Nine. Ocean’s Nine. All we know is that we got a crew assembled, now it’s the time to find the perfect timing for them to strike. And Fischoeder already come up with the perfect day in Saturday, mostly because the place usually gets busy on that one day of the week where there is no school and the place hosts some kid’s birthday party, yeah, looks like things are now in perfect swing. And nothing can destroy the whole thing from start to finish. Looks like Operation: Game Heist to earn a Dune Buggy is a go for the kids and for Mr. Fischoeder. Until…Louise decided to fuck it all up. She did pretty good job on doing that recently.
Yeah. So Louise ends up getting banned from coming into the establishment following her sneaking behind the prize counter and looking at the security cameras after the skeeball machine mysteriously disappear. It’s like she is getting further and further to knowing the truth. The whole truth on the mystery revolving around the skeeball machine and why Louise can’t just catch a break and not letting her win just one simple game. Almost sound like Attack on Titan, recently on the current season, spoilers if you’re not caught up, there was a huge conspiracy that the ruler of the walls is actually not the one true ruler and they have to put in the real one, the character of Historia Reiss, in charge. But the government said, “Yeah, fuck no. You ain’t doing shit. We’re gonna disband the scouts if you don’t hand over both Historia and Eren.” Went through that crazy shit. And I’m doing it again over at the dub.
But yeah, Louise got banned and because of that, the plan has taken a major beating. But it looks like the plan will have to go on, but Louise is now out of the picture. Or in sum it up what the others said to Louise following that little incident…
Yep, she blew it…until later on in the episode. But we’ll get to that. Now…to the squad…
Ain’t nobody fucking with my clique. Clique. Clique. Clique. Clique.
Ain’t nobody fresher than my motherfucking clique. Clique. Clique. Clique.
As I look around, they don't do it like my clique. Clique. Clique. Clique. Clique.
And all these bad bitches, man, they want th…okay, that’s enough of that. The gang enters Family Funtime to begin the heist that Louise mostly screwed up. But of course, now that Louise now excluded due to her being banned from the place, the plan must continue from Gene ready to shoot some hoops, not basketball mind you, while his hands are covered in caramel. To Jimmy Jr playing Operation and try not to fuck up an operation and let the patient die. I should say…begin with the heart. From them to the others with Zeke, Andy, Ollie, and Darryl getting tickets the same way both Gene and Jimmy Jr are doing off camera, giving the tickets to Tina, who is hiding inside the ball pit and putting the tickets into a bag that Tina is carrying from both Jimmy Jr and Darryl’s backpacks. And just as everyone go and get more tickets as they kept on playing, a power outage comes into play…to the machines that Jimmy Jr, Zeke, Gene, Andy, Ollie, and Darryl are at. Same thing with Louise, you ain’t getting shit. This is getting freakishly ridiculous. What it’s gonna take your fricking thick skulls to just let them have the dune buggy? Money? Drugs? The Yankees making another World Series title? Something has to be done.
The kids now landed themselves in the same spot where Louise is at. Telling them that it still ain’t gonna happen for them to earn the dune buggy. And just as they…almost looks like they’re the next ones to get the ban hammer, here comes the plot twist of the season so far. Introducing the asshole who is NOT letting the kids have at it with the dune buggy and it’s…
Mr. Fischoeder…ah! Man, that came out of nowhere…unless you’re in like the 30-65% of the fandom already knew that Fischoeder is the one responsible in all of this. I think some people have already sensed a red flag waving around the morning fog. And also found out that he is also the part owner of Family Funtimes. Man, which business DOESN’T he own? But apparently, Fischoeder wasn’t the threat the kids had to worry about, but the other owner decided to have a say in all of this. Thinking that the dune buggy too valuable and them winning it would create a problem, so he decided to take the dune buggy back into his office.
Okay…okay…answer me this one question. Why the fuck did you put the dune buggy up for a prize over at the building for some hotshot to claim it? What was your purpose? To fuck people around who are trying to earn the damn prize? I know that some games are rigged against their favor, but this? This is Wall Street evil. Oh, and if you think we’re gonna end it like that? Think again my good sir or madam or other. Because just as the owner of the building was about to take the dune buggy away from the said building, Louise, out of nowhere and still banned from coming back, popped into where everyone is at and it’s like everyone is calm following Tina answering Louise’s answer. And…this is where the crazy part comes into play?
So remember when Louise was declared banned from coming back to Family Funtime following her sneaking behind the prize counter? Well…while she was getting her photo taken by Yuli, the security guard, she knew…she knew that Fischoeder was the one who is messing things up since the very start. She noticed while getting her picture taken, she saw the photos of Fischoeder partaking in a company picnic. Putting two and two together, Fischoeder and the events of the episode that prevented Louise from getting the dune buggy, she knew that she was getting screwed. And telling everyone about it. And think of it from Louise to the others, as a massive warning that you’re gonna be screwed next. And they hid it just as Fischoeder arrives to the storage facility following Louise’s banishment. And if not winning the dune buggy is gonna make Louise a happy girl, heads down to Wonder Wharf and decided to take a little something called a consolation prize…in the form of a wooly mammoth plush that Fischoeder was eyeing on from the ball toss section of the wharf. And how did that work out? Well…
Louise won the mammoth. In a match that no one should ever win. Fischoeder said it himself. But Louise…thanks to Fischoeder and his big mouth back in the beginning of the episode after leaving the restaurant after failing once again to get the rent from them…that little trick that Louise got from him? Yep…that helped her win the whole enchilada. So Mr. Fischoeder, in the words of one of the greatest philosopher of all time once said…
Yep. Calvin played himself by giving away the tricks that didn’t get the kids the dune buggy but decided to take the consolation prize and decided to play with his heart strings by getting the mammoth from the four elements that she needed to win, Stickiness. Timing. Shaking. And muscle. That of course, earn them the W and for Calvin, the L. Louise outsmarts Mr. Fischoeder was something I did not expect out of nowhere. And man, like I said in the beginning, this episode wasn’t holding any punches. I was utterly shocked. Pretty sure some of y’all wasn’t and knew it was somewhat predictable, but you gotta hand it to Louise, she outsmarts her landlord. And for someone who is a devious little she-devil, who is also somewhat kind-hearted at sometimes, it’s like Fischoeder has become the person who fell into her trap. And for once, Fischoeder gave in and begins to head back home as the Belcher kids now take the mammoth back to their place as the night goes on. Crazy main plot we have to endure. But as for the subplot itself. Well…
The subplot with Teddy lending Bob and Linda an actual chicken was somewhat time wasting and I’ll get to that later on…you know what, I’m gonna say it right now, it was time wasting. It was time wasting. Mostly on the end of the subplot. Don’t get me wrong, Bob and Linda are trying their best to get the chicken to at least lay just one egg. ONE! Enough to last at least a morning…for a serving of one person. Wow, that’s sad to come up with.
There is one upside though with the subplot in this episode, and that is of course, the question of who’s a better singer to get the chicken to lay an egg? A lot of people going for Linda and her singing. But…I’m gonna go with Bob on this one. Even though Linda criticized that his singing would put the chicken to sleep rather than it laying an egg. Hey, I rather have Bob singing me to a good night’s sleep, thank you very much. Better have that as a soundbite for those sound machines that help you sleep better throughout the night. Thought H. Jon Benjamin has a good singing voice.
But everything else…oh god, remember my review from last week when I said that I fear that the show might be preparing to make an unbearable turn to jump the shark? I’m fearing that’s a coming. But not right now. And we have to wait until the end of the episode, after the kids won the mammoth and outsmarted Fischoeder, take a look on what happens next…
Yep, after it takes the whole episode from start to finish, the chicken finally lay an egg. Maybe next, we can get the chicken how it should cross the road? Guys…in all of my lifetime, watching the series since around late 2013 in the beginning to mid-parts of Season 4 before the start of 2014, I see through a lot of subplots along the way. Some good. Some bad. Then there’s some that is mediocre at it’s finest. The subplot from Season 6’s Bye Bye Boo Boo is the worst that I have seen in my time in the fandom. I think this one, despite being a time waster of a subplot, comes in second. When it comes to bad subplots. Let’s hope next week’s subplot don’t end up being another shitshow.
So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? Like I said for the main plot, this episode wasn’t holding any punches with the whole heist with the kids trying to get every ticket they can get to earn the dune buggy. And I really loving the dynamic between both Louise and Mr. Fischoeder as the alliance was set in motion. Despite that Louise already knew that Fischoeder was the one who’s screwing around the kids’ plot to win the dune buggy.
Like I also said back in the beginning, never have I ever watched a heist movie, but watching this episode very episode almost feels like you’re watching one. Despite that Doctor Who back in 2014 in Time Heist already did that to yours truly. By the way, just to put this there, going off-topic, The Woman Who Fell to Earth. Jodie Whittaker did an amazing job in her first episode as the new Doctor. You have Gene, Tina, and Louise teaming up with Fischoeder. And having people like Zeke, Jimmy Jr, Andy, Ollie, and Darryl involved to help them getting the dune buggy, it’s like everything could go perfectly as planned. That is until Louise decided to fuck it all up and end up getting banned for life from coming back. Yeah…looks like the banishment stays for Louise after this episode. Someone should tell Loren Bouchard that over on Twitter. Pretty sure we might get some answers.
And as for that ending to the main plot…jeez. Jeez. Louise outsmarts Mr. Fischoeder following the idea that she was getting screwed by Fischoeder from the start. Noticing the pictures of him at the company picnic when getting her picture taken on the banned list. Getting the consolation prize in the form of a mammoth plush on roller skates. And got his big mouth spilled on how to win the prize that was supposed to be reserved for the dune buggy, Fischoeder got played like a dog. Like a dog. It’s like he fell into the trap that he didn’t even noticed even though he was supposed to be the one who was setting up the trap quietly. Like I said, the main plot was a wild roller coaster and I really loving the dynamic between both Louise and Mr. Fischoeder and we can only hope we can more of this in the future.
I’m not missing something. No sir. I already felt disappointment from this subplot. You can’t make me talk about it again. Next week’s subplot better not be a total shitshow. So all and all, I think this episode a wild roller coaster ride for the main plot and a disappointing time waster for the subplot. I give “The Taking of Funtime One Two Three”…
…an 8 out of 10. The main plot of the episode was enjoyable and like I said, a wild roller coaster ride with the heist coming into play. And the ending of the main plot is what sold me that we are dealing a good episode…if it weren’t for the subplot being a total time waster. Waiting for the chicken to lay an egg until the last minutes of the episode following the kids winning the mammoth. Let’s hope next week’s episode don’t go wash, rinse, and repeat. And speaking of next week, tune in this upcoming Sunday where the kids partake in the business world when joining a business club at school while Bob and Linda have to deal with a serial dine and dasher in the Third Episode of the Ninth Season, “Tweentrepreneurs”. So don’t miss it.
What do you think about this week’s episode? Do you like it? Do you hate it? Are you in the slice of pie where you knew that Fischoeder was the part owner of Family Funtime? Are you surprised that Louise outsmarts Fischoeder following her connecting the dots? And…are you disappointing with the subplot? And who’s a better singer, Bob or Linda?
