The Countdown Continues. Number 11: Attack on Titan Season 3A 進撃の巨人 | yahoo201027's Top 20 Countdown of 2018
The Top 20 Countdown for 2018 is now nearing it’s climax with eleven more spots, well, now only ten spots needed to be filled, and coming in at Number 11 in the Top 20 Countdown, despite that there were some trouble picking any one of the episode from this season of Attack on Titan, I say I should probably shake it up a bit and probably share my thoughts on the third season of Attack on Titan. Well technically, the first half of Season 3. Cause the season’s on a pause until April.
So Season 3 of Attack on Titan, just be thankful that we didn’t go on the long wait like what the fandom had to deal with following the end of Season 1 back in 2013 and wait for like almost half a decade in 2017 with Season 2. So again, just be thankful for that. But here’s what’s different with this season than the previous two seasons of Attack on Titan.
First off being, of course since this is Attack on Titan, the Titans aren’t the main focus of the season. I mean yeah, later on in the first half of Season 3, we have the scouts taking on a humongous ass Titan thanks to Rod Reiss, following Historia’s rejection of letting him turn her into a Titan and continue the family heritage, via tongue lick on the liquid and transform to I guess an imperfect Titan with its face being torn to shreds as he travels down with steam coming out and cause some trees along the way catching fire. Did I mention he’s huge because if you think that Bertholdt’s Colossal Titan was the biggest in the series, hence the name “Colossal”, well…Rod Reiss pretty much bested him by a mile.
But yeah, Titans are not the prime focus of this season. That spotlight has now pointed towards humanity. Most importantly, the government. So apparently, just as the new season, things aren’t looking good in the Scouts’ way as the government now putting a warrant on them over the murder of Pastor Nick, despite that Hanji knows that “Hey, that was not us. The First Interior Squad of the Military Police murdered the guy via torture.” That and of course, the government now want the Scouts to hand over both Eren and Historia but the Scouts would rather not do that and Levi thinks that there’s someone out setting his eyes to dismantle the Scouts and for a good reason. Conspiracy.
The current king of the walls is a total fraud. Reiss is the true royal family. Yeah, so found out that the current king, the so-called King Fritz, is somewhat of a total fraud and should not be in power. Also finding out that the Reiss family are the true heir of the throne. And coming from a now one-armed Erwin, once the coup d’état is dealt with, which it did successfully thanks to Erwin’s gamble, dude loves to gamble, I’ll tell you what, that Historia will be crowned the new leader. Think of it like Netflix’s The Crown, only finding out that current leader is a total fraud and we have ourselves a massive turmoil to put the real royal family into power. Oh hey, that’s pretty much almost every other country in the past and present.
This season was pretty much Historia’s time to shine. And despite that the first half of Season 2 focuses more on the side characters whether it’s Sasha saving that little girl at a village that was already attacked by a Titan or Connie wanting to figure out the Titan that destroyed his home and somehow spoke to him, or Ymir turning into a Titan when the chips down when being stranded around a hoard of Titan. And don’t get me started with the betrayal of Reiner and Bertholdt. This was Historia’s time to be on the spotlight.
With Ymir now out of the picture at the end of Season 2, she’s now acting all mopey and now thinks that all hope that she has now no longer exists following Connie telling Eren that he wants to get back at the Beast Titan for ravaging his home village. But then the whole thing with the Interior Police comes kicking in and taking the two them away. And of course, being ended up being reunited with Rod, revealing that he’s his father and decided to fall in line to almost to the point where she automatically accepts her fate and follow through the bullshit coming from Rod.
We have backstories though on Historia, and these aren’t the kind of backstories where we know about the character only to get the shaft come the end of the episode, nope, this isn’t like that. We have two backstories with Historia, the first being with her mother, or in this case, Historia trying to get her mother’s attention but her mother, yeah…pretty much the type of “I hate you. I don’t want you here. Wish you were never born.” Yeah, mother of the year. Oh and she died in front of Historia in the hands of Kenny and his men following the fall of Wall Maria. And of course, the second one with a sister named Frieda. So despite that she has a mom who don’t want Historia to be around, mostly living on this planet, at least she has a sister around to hang out and be around with that one scene with Historia reading. So that was nice…until Freida wipes away Historia’s memory of her and saying that she’ll visit her again…until Grisha comes in and deciding to fuck everything up.
Her rejecting to take the shot of letting her father injecting her was pretty much the shining moment for her character. Thought that she was gonna let Rod get away with it and have her being injected, turns into a Titan, and eat Eren, if it weren’t for that flashback with Ymir as she’s was about to turn into a Titan, that would’ve been played out. But nope, instead, she ends up not taking any of the bullshit, rejects the idea of her turning into a Titan, and freeing Eren from the chains. Declaring her the enemy of humanity and was like, “Fuck humanity. I’m not their saving grace. Want to get eaten by Titans? Then have at it.” Mostly because she’s tired of the bullshit and decided to how to live her life her way and not follow through a lie or in Ymir’s case, suicidal and throw her life away. It’s development for Historia at it’s finest and that’s something to watch over as the season progresses from that to do one last job as a free woman before taking the throne and stopping the Reiss Titan and kills Rod in the nape. Now that, was a badass moment from her.
Historia’s isn’t the only character that got the spotlight in this season. Enter Levi. I know that he’s pretty much the fan favorite, to the fangirls for his looks and attitude and to the fanboys his attitude and skills, this was also his season because he knows one of the antagonists of this season. One being Kenny. We had a flashback in one episode just Kenny was about to bite the dust where we explore his time from meeting Uri, one of Reiss family members, to where we are now. And while that is happening, found a slowly dying Levi sitting in the back of the room and takes him in his wing and teaches him survival skills and how to live in the life of crime. And once while that is happening while stepping on one of the individuals, Kenny just straight up left the scene. Flashing forward to this arc at the current timeline as the whole fiasco with the government comes into play. He and his goons taking out troops like it was shooting targets in training, taking out the now former head of the Reivess company, and of course, taking Historia and Eren. And of course, who wouldn’t forget the scene when finding out that Levi’s last name is the same as Mikasa’s. Related because of the last name…uh…don’t know about that? Seems kind of slim like around…let’s say 5%, let’s go with that.
And then there’s Eren. Could you like do us a favor for once and like…I don’t know, not be the damsel in distress for one season! ONE! Because this is now getting out of hand from getting caught by the Female Titan, get taken by Reiner and Bertholdt alongside Ymir, and now, about to get eaten and just accepts it. The last one is mostly because of what his father Grisha did from Rod telling Historia about what happened to Frieda. And of course, the memory. After the events of the uprising and before heading out to retake Wall Maria, the memory of Grisha comes into play and now has to ask someone who was there and seen it all. And thus, Keith Shadis, the drill instructor back in Season 1. And Keith, yeah, despite being there in the action from meeting Grisha outside the walls to seeing Eren all alone following him (Eren) turning to a Titan and eats Grisha following that injection. Despite that Eren wants some answers, Keith was pretty much upset over the fact that life isn’t going his way, mostly following the success that Grisha had from curing a disease that would’ve wipe humanity out to marrying Carla and have Eren. Don’t know if there was some point in time where Keith might’ve had feelings for Carla, I don’t know about that? You could say that he’s nothing than a bystander but seems more of…like being behind Grisha’s shadow. Wanting to be special in the kind of how Levi and Erwin been, how to say…appreciated. But that didn’t happen. Thus to where Keith is at now. And Eren agrees that he’s not special, but he told him that he’s not special as well. Having one last memory with Carla telling Keith that is it wrong to not be special? And that Eren being born is already the most specialist thing in the world. So you could that all five of these characters, Eren, Historia, Levi, Keith, and Kenny have their share in the spotlight and that was something to watch over. Mostly with Historia.
And as for the Season 3 opening…I like it. I don’t get why people are hating on it mostly because it’s Attack on Titan and the past three openings are epic and have the viewer pumped up while this one is all mellow and seems like you’re watching a slice of life. All I know is that I like it. That’s all what I can say. For more on what this opening is the perfect fit, go watch Mother’s Basement’s take on the opening below.
