The Countdown Continues. Number 16: Final Space: “Chapter Six” | yahoo201027's Top 20 Countdown of 2018
Do you ever get that little feeling that whenever you watch a character, whether you like it or hate it, and wishing that the character that been killed off early wish he or she got more screen time and provide help for future events? Well, that would be the character of Avocato following this episode now featured in this spot in the Top 20 Countdown of 2018 as both he and Gary travel down to the prison planet to break Little Cato, the son of Avocato, out of the prison as Quinn learns about who’s the real, raw Gary truly is in Number 16 in the Top 20 Countdown is Final Space, “Chapter Six”.
Um…oh boy. Where to begin? Where to begin with this? Um…we have a character death. A character death and in the major level and only six episodes in. And that was after he finally got his wish, finally got his life’s goal now checked out, in the form of freeing Little Cato from the prison planet and of course, from the Lord Commander.
Though people kind of felt cheated over the fact that everyone’s favorite Ventrexian is no longer with the crew following this episode. Mostly due to the fact that he’s…
Dead. Dead. Been put down to rest in the hands of the crew of the show. And it’s like it came out of freaking nowhere. Mostly around the end of the episode, thought that we were gonna have a nice father/son reunion get together and see the two Ventrexians in action in now helping Quinn out with her situation in closing the breach and saving the universe, getting some extra arms in the fight. Nope. Your goal is done. You’re free to die now. God, this episode.
This was Avocato’s time to shine with this episode after receiving a message from Little Cato on his coordinates, despite not knowing that this was all a possible trap, even though it is a trap because at the end of the last episode, Little Cato sends out a message of his coordinates to Avocato with the help of a random stranger, not knowing that the Lord Commander was the one who lend Little Cato the support, as bait to lure Avocato, and Gary…mostly Gary, to him. Mostly because of the whole thing with Mooncake. Avocato of course, can’t refuse to go and save his son from the Lord Commander.
I like how the friendship between Gary and Avocato played out in a major situation like this one. Despite that Quinn threatens to leave the ship because Avocato’s problem gets chosen over her’s, Gary had to help his best buddy out at a time of need. Stepping in to help Avocato out. Think of it like a pit shop but we’ll end up brining in some extra help in your cause to close the breach. Yeah, something like that. These are two people, despite having different backgrounds, and despite having different goals with Gary protecting Mooncake and Avocato wanting to save Little Cato, they now made it their life’s mission to do the impossible, no matter the challenges the universe might throw at them.
The whole scene with Gary and Avocato entering the prison planet and storming into the prison was something to watch over. Them jumping down towards it, wearing suits, playing epic music, while epic yes, seems somewhat downplaying it. I’m not taking a shit on it. Just putting it out there, a little loud, a little loud when it comes to the volume. But that doesn’t stop from enjoying that scene. Despite at first, landing at the wrong planet and then finally landing on the right one.
And of course, that little scene with Avocato and Gary storming in the prison, using a sticky bomb to open the door and fire away right away. Seconds after the door was blasted open. Blast after blast. Holy cow, you could it was handled perfectly. Because it sounds like it is. Also like the whole thing with Gary shooting and out of nowhere, we have doves flying out as he shoots. Probably there to add effect, visual and comedic to say the least. And it’s almost funny on the point of who are they shooting at. They mostly shooting at the air. Nobody is shooting them back. Is just…them shooting in the air, not noticing not one single lifeform in the prison. You could the prison guards got their butts handed, but not from them. You could say Little Cato might have something to with since I guess last episode on his way to the main computer. Y-yeah, it might have something to do with Little Cato. A lot of prison guards vs one small cat, who would win that fight?
We got a backstory with Avocato and why he made it his life’s mission to save his son from the Lord Commander. Found out that he used to work with him, not as a bounty hunter back in the first episode, but more in line of being a massive threat. He was second in command for the Lord Commander. Not showing any mercy to any lifeform, even if you’re just a random civilian, you’re not gonna get some sympathy from him. Think of Avocato like…somewhere around a cross of Grand Moff Tarkin or General Hux from Star Wars. I swear, this series is like we’re taking pages out of Star Wars. Disney might go after you now, mate. Things were going well for Avocato, up until he’s been told to murder Little Cato as the rest of the army shoot down their children. Like…holy fuck, that’s fucked up. But Avocato…can’t do it. He can’t shoot his pride and joy and decided to shoot the Lord Commander but ending up falling flat and thus him and Little Cato end up getting separated to where we are now. Yeah, it was somewhat of a messed up backstory, but at least we know why Avocato is going the whole nine yards and makes it his life’s mission to save his son. But since this is a flashback and Avocato’s an emotionally attached character…dead. Once we go into flashback mode with a character, while it gives the viewer or reader to dive into the history of the character and how we got here, also raised the death flag waving in the background, warning them that this character is not gonna survive come the end of the episode. This episode was aired back in April…Avocato got Caesar’d. Our boy got Caesar’d. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Caesar Zeppeli, he got a flashback, and look how that ended.
The fight between Avocato and a now possessed Little Cato was something alright. Because while the Lord Commander is busy getting some intel by entering Gary’s mind on the location of Mooncake, trying to reason with Little Cato and trying to get him out of being mind possessed. Talking while fighting…not a good thing to have those two in the mix when it comes to the action, especially if you’re taking on your own son. In anime, yes. Here, that almost got Avocato killed. I mean, he almost had it but of course, that failed to snap some sense back into Little Cato. So hugging may be the next big thing to do and lo and behold, Little Cato finally got his sense back and finally reunite with his dad that he haven’t seen in years. But of course, the reunion now has to wait as they now have to go get Gary, who having trouble fighting the Lord Commander and getting out of his mind, until KVN and Mooncake arrives thanks to HUE and Quinn and finally have the three escape to the Galaxy One. Now with a new crew mate in hands. So hey, extra arms! Ha ha…sad times are coming.
Speaking of Quinn and HUE, just as Quinn was about to exit out due to Gary choosing to help Avocato freeing Little Cato rather than go on and close the breach and save the whole universe, HUE decided to give her a little proper lesson on who’s the real Gary is. The real, raw Gary. Showing clips. Lots and lots of real, raw, unedited clips throughout the five year sentence that he’s serving. And even all the way to the recent one while over at the prison compound in which he was supposed to take a leak but instead records a video of him and thinks that he might not make it out alive. Though spoiler alert, he did…in this episode. After the season…ehhhh…wait till Season 2. And I like how the videos that he recorded for her decided to change her mind with the whole idea of ditching the crew following the decision to break Little Cato out. I know that saving the universe is important. Millions, if not, billions of people’s lives are at stake. But having Little Cato around in the Galaxy One, you gotta need another individual to help out with the cause. And it looks like having Little Cato on board is the best solution to have in mind.
And then we get to that. A storm’s a brewing in this one folks. If you think that we get happy ending now that Little Cato is now out of the prison and both Gary and Avocato now made back alive and well, it looks like we’re gonna have ourselves a nice little father/son reunion and finally have the perfect family frame of a photo…until…
Yep. Dead. Like that. Lord Commander decided to fuck everything up, place a stick bomb on the back of Little Cato, and once the little reunion is done with Avocato noticing the sound of the bomb ready to be ticked off moments before implosion, with nowhere to throw it, it looks like he didn’t have a choice. Not one choice to keep him alive while getting the people he knew safe and ends up sacrificing himself, thus resulting him dead away from the ship with his chest blown open and fallen into the planet’s atmosphere as everyone, and I mean everyone watching over that. Including poor Little Cato, watching over his dad dying in front of him. Sound familiar with a certain someone who also watched his dad died when he was young? Watched his dad die…in front of him. After he saved him from prison. And you do that?!
I mean yeah, his job is now crossed off from the list with Little Cato now liberated and now a part of the Galaxy One. But yeah, with that flashback we have with Avocato, that pretty much signals that he’s a dead man come the end of the episode. But can the guy have one little moment with his son?
But yeah, Number 16 in the Top 20 Countdown. The reason why I put this episode on here, yeah, Avocato’s death came out of nowhere at the end of the episode and the backstory of why Avocato was determined to save his boy was pretty much a death flag waving in the background, warning the viewers that he’s gonna die at the end, but…you think that was too soon to take him out like that. Because yeah, it feels like it was too soon to take a major character like Avocato out of the picture. You would’ve think it would be better if saving Little Cato would’ve been the focus for Season 1 and the whole saving the universe and closing the breach thing would’ve been the focus for the second. Nope, let’s have Avocato be there…for six episodes. May be come back as a memory or a force ghost or worst case scenario, the Infinity Guard doing a Rick and Morty, like with the Galactic Federation did to Bird Person after he was shot and killed back in Season 2 of the series, turned into a cyborg at the end of the season 3 premiere. Actually, Olan, don’t do that. Don’t freaking do the idea of Avocato coming back as a cyborg. Because that right there is pretty much a jumping a shark moment if that were to come through fruition.
But despite that little…highlight at the end of the episode, this was a very good episode. I like how the emotions played out with both Avocato and Little Cato as he tries to snap some sense into his son when being possessed. His backstory, despite being a massive death flag waving in the background, was something to know about when it comes to Avocato’s character and what is goal is and how his goal came to be. And I was hoping for some quality father/son moments after this episode, but it looks like we’re not getting now due to that fact uh…Avocato’s been put down to rest. So uh…rest in peace, Avocato. Kinda wish you stayed behind and alive to see some more action.
So that’s about it for Number 16 in the Top 20 Countdown for 2018. The first five on the list has now been filled, now to the second of the five part list going from 20-16 to now 15-11 with Number 15 tomorrow with a Thanksgiving episode that pretty much exceed all expectations than your normal Thanksgiving episodes and you’ll have to wait and find out come tomorrow.
