Greetings Comrades! The Top 20 Countdown continues with Number 19 and this one isn't in my list of fandoms for the year 2014 but this one caught my attention. Here it is, Number 19: "The Real Thomas".
This episode of Regular Show is spotlighted on the character that we haven't got intel on and only been in the series for 1 season, and now for this episode, we got the full confirmation on everyone's favorite intern at the park, Thomas. Or should I say, Nicolai, his real name.
Yes, it's just found out that our favorite goat is indeed a Russian spy, a KGB member. We got a full on backstory on him including that he was abandoned at birth, born in Kiev, back at the time, the Soviet Union (USSR), and trained from the government. Who would have thought that backstory was way to crazy to handle when the episode came out. Found out he was sent because in Soviet Russia, there's no park. So the Soviets provide the plan to take a park from US soil to Russian soil by getting both Nicolai and Natalia (Thomas' partner in the KGB) to sneak into the US by cargo carrier, pretending to be US citizens with Natalia as a Kindergarten teacher and Nicolai as a college intern.
And of course, flashing back to the beginning of Season 5 when Thomas first come in, at the time, saving the park from turning into a highway and other parts as followed along like saving the statue from Gene at the rival park and getting the families to join at Thanksgiving. The one I don't get is the Christmas special, you know, the whole present that does not want to fall into the wrong hands. Yeah, while the main characters are off saving Christmas, Thomas at the other hand off screen, put up engines underground at the park.
Now don't get me wrong, but according to the Wikia, it says that this episode is primarily centered at the current conflict between the US and Russia, both countries are at each other throats since the end of the Cold War in 1991 since the Soviet Union was disbanded due to economic collapse. From Human Rights with Pussy Riot and the LBGT community to the Crimean annexation to the Malaysian Flight shot down in Eastern Ukraine. So far I think that 2014 is not a pretty good year for the US and Russia.
So remember that Russia wants a park that they didn't have so they have to take a park from US soil to them in the earlier parts of the episode? Yeah, that was until we found out that Russia wants to destroy it while the park along with Mordecai, Rigby, Benson, Skips, Pops, Muscle Man, and High Five Ghost is heading towards Russian territory. It's like they just pulled a gambit, they wanted a park, but instead, they want to destroy by missile testing. Which we cut over to the UN council, the US told Russia that they are breaking the Arms Treaty. But Russia got the US good by telling them that they are NOT attacking their soil, but take one piece of soil to them and them blow it up.
So we got a change of heart for Thomas in this episode from minor character to protagonist to antagonist all the way back to protagonist by bringing the park back to US soil thanks to Mordecai, Rigby, and Benson. So Thomas got the park back and switch sides from Russian spy to American hero, but sadly, he has to leave because he is a wanted man, now in both countries. And he had to run into the sunset. And for that, Thomas, or Nicolai, will be never be seen again.
So why did this episode got the Number 19 spot? We got full on character development on Thomas that we haven't got in a single episode that includes from birth to present. Roger Craig Smith perfecting his Russian accent was a well done performance when we got the revelation of Thomas being a Russian spy. We're gonna miss Roger Craig Smith for playing Thomas, even though I already heard his voice in different shows like Deidara from Naruto Shippuden and Shinji Hirako from Bleach. Although I did not notice his other roles including the character of Belson from Clarence and Sonic the Hedgehog from Sonic Boom.
Also, this episode includes the part that Benson and Aubrey broke up but everyone didn't get the memo. The fandom didn't got it as well? What the hell happened? Are things never worked out? We'll never know. Anyway, stay tuned for Number 18 as we enter an adventure in Time and Space.
