Whether you like him or hate him, mostly around hating, after five seasons with the show, Current Showrunner of Doctor Who, Steven Moffat, announced that he’ll be leaving by the time Series 10 of the show ends. And of course, found his replacement, which I will talk as you scroll down. Gotta talk about Moffat first.
We kinda knew this was coming at first following both the end of Series 9 and Jenna Coleman’s departure and there were rumors going on by the fans following the end of Series 9 and the 2015 Christmas Special. Moffat took over the title of showrunner following the departure of Russell T. Davies back in 2010 and served as head writer during both the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi era. Not to mention, done 6 Christmas Specials and was in charge of the 50th Anniversary Special in 2013. Here’s what Moffat has to say about his departure from the show.
"Feels odd to be talking about leaving when I’m just starting work on the scripts for season 10, but the fact is my timey-wimey is running out. While Chris is doing his last run of Broadchurch, I’ll be finishing up on the best job in the universe and keeping the TARDIS warm for him. It took a lot of gin and tonic to talk him into this, but I am beyond delighted that one of the true stars of British Television drama will be taking the Time Lord even further into the future. At the start of season 11, Chris Chibnall will become the new showrunner of Doctor Who. And I will be thrown in a skip."
According to Nerdist News, it’s revealed that Series 10 will be his last, in charge of 12 episodes and won’t air until Spring 2017. Yes, Spring 2017 will be his last and of course, where Series 10 of the show premieres. Looks like the Whoniverse will be taking a year long hiatus, but don’t fret fans, because we will get a Christmas Special this year, so it looks like we’re going to have to wait for 12 months. And I thought Episode VIII of Star Wars being pushed was bad enough. And of course, it’s unclear that we’ll get a new companion by the time the Christmas Special airs on the 25th.
Of course, gotta talk about Moffat’s successor, announced that it’s going to be someone named Chris Chibnall, who did some work on the show, along with the show “Broadchurch”, which starts David Tennant. Chibnall will be taking over the show from Moffat by the time 2018 comes in, or in this case, Series 11 of Doctor Who. Here’s what Chibnall have to say about his new job.
"Doctor Who is the ultimate BBC program: bold, unique, vastly entertaining, and adored all around the world. So it’s a privilege and a joy to be the next curator of this funny, scary and emotional family drama. I’ve loved Doctor Who since I was four years old, and I’m relishing the thought of working with the exceptional team at BBC Wales to create new characters, creatures and worlds for the Doctor to explore. Steven’s achieved the impossible by continually expanding Doctor Who’s creative ambition, while growing its global popularity. He’s been a dazzling and daring showrunner, and hearing his plans and stories for 2017, it’s clear he’ll be going out with a bang. Just to make my life difficult."
So what do you think about this news coming from the network? Will you miss Moffat’s work on the show? Will Chibnall do a fantastic work with the show by the time 2018 comes? Will we get a new companion by the time Christmas comes? Tell me what you think in the comment below.
